What Does Microneedling Treat?
Microneedling stimulates your natural repair process to improve various concerns, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars and other atrophic scars
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Sun damage and photoaging
- Mild skin laxity
- Dull, tired-looking skin
- Uneven skin tone
- Stretch marks
- Surgical scars
- Crepey skin on the face, neck, and décolletage
How Does Rejuvapen Microneedling Work?
Your skin naturally produces collagen and elastin to keep it smooth, firm, and resilient. As you age, collagen production slows, and damage from sun exposure, acne, and everyday wear can leave behind fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture, and increasingly noticeable scars.
At LaVida Medspa, we use the Rejuvapen device to create thousands of microchannels within the epidermis and dermis. This controlled micro-injury triggers collagen induction therapy (CIT), allowing your skin to repair itself naturally while improving the absorption of PRF, PDGF, or exosomes when appropriate. The healing process occurs in three distinct phases:
Your Skin's Natural Healing Process
- Phase 1 (inflammatory phase): Microneedling treatment begins with the release of natural growth factors, triggering epidermal cell growth, fibroblast migration, fibroblast proliferation, and extracellular matrix production.
- Phase 2 (proliferative phase): Continued healing stimulates fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and monocytes to produce collagen types I, III, and IV, elastin, proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and new blood vessels.
- Phase 3 (remodeling phase): The final remodeling phase strengthens the skin’s support structure as collagen matures, the vascular matrix reorganizes, and visible improvements in skin firmness, texture, and quality develop, all without heat or thermal damage.
Every patient’s skin is different, which is why we offer several advanced microneedling options. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your concerns, skin condition, and goals to recommend the treatment that will provide the greatest benefit for your skin.
Personalized Microneedling Options
Microneedling With PRF
Microneedling with PRF combines Rejuvapen collagen induction with platelet-rich fibrin prepared from a small sample of your own blood. The PRF is applied directly to the skin after microneedling, allowing platelets, white blood cells, fibrin, and naturally occurring growth factors to penetrate deeper into the tissue. These growth factors are released gradually, helping boost collagen production, support tissue repair, and enhance your body’s natural healing process.
PDGF Microneedling
PDGF microneedling combines Rejuvapen with Ariessence PDGF, a topical solution containing recombinant platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). As the microchannels are created, PDGF is delivered into the epidermis and upper dermis, where it binds to receptors on the fibroblasts and repair cells. This activates cellular signaling involved in collagen synthesis, tissue regeneration, and wound healing, helping improve skin texture, fine lines, and overall skin quality.
Exosome Microneedling
Exosome microneedling combines Rejuvapen with V-tech Exosomes by Promoitalia to maximize your regenerative response. Once the microchannels are created, the exosomes are applied to the area, allowing extracellular vesicles containing peptides, proteins, lipids, and signaling molecules to penetrate the skin. These messengers help improve communication between skin cells, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the skin’s natural repair process.
Is Microneedling Better Than Dermarolling?
Yes. At LaVida, we use the Rejuvapen device because it is safer, more precise, and more effective than traditional dermarolling. Rejuvapen uses vertical needle technology to create controlled microchannels at a precise 90-degree angle, reducing unnecessary skin trauma while improving collagen induction.
Adjustable needle depths and treatment speeds allow us to customize your procedure for different areas of the face, including delicate regions around the eyes, nose, and lips. The vertical delivery also improves the penetration of PRF, PDGF, and exosomes while making it easier to treat acne scars and other irregular tissue. The result is greater precision, improved comfort, faster recovery, and consistent rejuvenation.
What Are the Potential Side Effects?
Microneedling is generally well tolerated. But as with any procedure that creates controlled micro-injuries, temporary side effects can occur, including:
- Redness similar to a mild or moderate sunburn
- Mild swelling and skin tightness
- Tenderness or sensitivity to touch
- Dryness, flaking, or light peeling as the skin renews itself
- Pinpoint bleeding during treatment
- Temporary bruising, particularly with PRF microneedling
- Mild itching during the healing process
- Temporary breakouts or purging in acne-prone skin
- Rare risk of infection, prolonged irritation, or pigment changes
Most patients experience redness for 24 to 48 hours, while mild dryness or flaking may continue for several days. There is little downtime, and many people return to normal activities the next day. For the first 24 hours, avoid makeup, strenuous exercise, swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and excessive sweating. Continue using a gentle cleanser and broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoid exfoliating products and active ingredients such as retinoids or acids until your skin has fully recovered, and follow your provider’s aftercare instructions to support optimal healing.
FAQs
How Do I Prepare for My Appointment?
Your provider will review detailed pre-treatment instructions during your consultation. In general, avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning, exfoliants, retinoids, and irritating skincare products for several days before treatment unless instructed otherwise. Arriving with clean skin and following your personalized preparation instructions helps ensure minimal irritation afterward.
When Will I See My Results?
Some patients notice smoother skin within the first week as the skin recovers. However, collagen remodeling takes time. Improvements in texture, fine lines, acne scars, and firmness become more noticeable over 4 to 12 weeks as new collagen and elastin develop beneath the skin. Because collagen production continues after treatment, your results can continue to improve for several months.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments depends on your skin concerns and goals. Mild texture concerns may respond well to 3 treatments, while acne scars, deeper wrinkles, or significant sun damage often require a series of 4 to 6 sessions. Treatments are generally scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow your skin to complete the collagen remodeling process before the next session.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Once new collagen is produced, it can provide long-lasting improvements. However, your skin continues to age naturally, and collagen production gradually declines over time. Many patients choose maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months to help preserve their results, especially if they have ongoing concerns with skin texture, aging, or acne scarring.
